Data size units and how to convert them
Data sizes start at the byte (B) and grow by factors of 1024: 1 KB = 1024 B, 1 MB = 1024 KB, 1 GB = 1024 MB, and so on through TB and PB. The 1024 step comes from computers being binary at heart. Enter a value and its unit here and every other unit is converted at once, so you can read off the size in whichever unit you need.
The confusing part is that drive manufacturers label capacity using steps of 1000 (1 GB = 1000 MB). That is why a "1 TB" disk shows up as roughly 931 GB in your operating system. Neither number is wrong — they use different definitions. This tool uses the 1024 step so the result matches what your OS reports.
