Grayscale, sepia and inverted colour effects
This tool applies four different colour treatments to an image. Grayscale strips the colour information and leaves only luminance. Sepia adds the warm brown cast of an old photograph. Invert replaces every pixel with its opposite colour, producing a film-negative look. The brightness/contrast mode gives you two sliders for fine adjustment instead of a fixed effect.
Converting to grayscale is common when you want a consistent tone across images in a document, or when the output is destined for black-and-white printing. Inverting is handy for making scanned documents easier to read on screen, or for checking a design. The original and the processed version are shown side by side so you can judge the effect directly.
All processing happens on a canvas inside your browser, so the image is never uploaded. Download the result when you are happy with it, or hit reset to return to the original. No installation and no account are required.
Frequently asked questions
- Is grayscale the same as black and white?
- Not quite. Grayscale keeps the full range of grey tones, while a pure black-and-white (bitonal) image has only two values. This tool produces grayscale.
- Does converting reduce image quality?
- Resolution is unchanged, but discarded colour information cannot be recovered, so keep the original file if you might need the colours later.
- Can I adjust brightness and contrast together?
- Yes. The brightness/contrast mode gives you both sliders at once and previews the combined result immediately.
- Is my image uploaded?
- No. Everything is processed inside your browser.
